General safety considerations for all visitors to the mountain:
Carry a flashlight at all times, both day and night.
Know how to use extensions 8721 and 8777 to call for assistance.
Understand and respect the risks involved while working in this environment.
Exercise care on slippery metal surfaces and elevated platforms.
Walk carefully in the dark.
Drive vehicles slowly.
Observe all posted warning signs.
Exercise caution while handling dry ice and liquid cryogens.
Use the Bump Caps when working in places of low head room.
Safety procedures specific to the 4-meter telescope:
Know the procedure to follow when the building fire alarm sounds.
Watch for water and ice on the cement floors around the telescope.
Do not enter the following restricted areas:
Ground floor beyond the elevator area.
Third floor.
U (Utility) floor beyond the Sky Survey Room.
P (Pump) floor.
Under the telescope on the main floor.
#5 coudé mirror area.
Inner catwalk, console room level.
Crane stairway inside of the dome.
North stairway on telescope across the horseshoe.
Always inform the operator of where you are going and how long you are likely to be gone.
During the winter stay away from the building when ice is falling from the dome.
Watch for moving vehicles when exiting the building. |
